Over the last few months, we’ve been hosting workshops focusing on the art of songwriting. We’ve had some amazing panelists who have led the group unpacking various topic related to arrangements, song structure, lyrics and beating writer’s block.
At our last workshop, we discussed the formation of a Songwriter’s Circle, a collective of people who were willing to openly share their music and contribute to the group by offering both encouragement and constructive feedback to improve all the songs we write.
We’ve been bashing around a few ideas in the background on how to proceed and would like to float a few ideas with you at our next meeting.
A Facebook Group will be launched at the same time for those interested in participating in an online discussion, which will run parallel to the meet-ups here at The DownTown Music Hub.
We’ll be setting the framework and T’s and C’s for the online discussions, so please make sure you are here to add your voice.
Date: Saturday the 2nd of September
Venue: 4th Floor Balcony @ The DownTown Music Hub
Time: 10:30am…for smart songwriters who network and hustle, or 11:00 am sharp! .. to hear the beginning of the first presentation.
11h00 – The fantastic Phumelele Mzimela from the Wits School of Arts is back! She gave us a brief introduction to the term “Prosody” the last time we met and will be unpacking this topic further.
11h30 – We kick off listening sessions, by drawing 3 songs out of a bag.
- Be brave! We don’t bite and you’ll get loads of feedback on your writing that you would never have received before.
- Submit your song in a .wav or .mp3 format on a flash memory stick that has been scanned for any potential viruses.
One song per flash memory stick with a short written piece of 300 words, or less on an included text document that explains the background of the song, it’s meaning and your intent for writing it. Make sure to label your memory stick with your name, so that we can return all the sticks after the session.
- The three songs will be presented and given 20-minutes to 30-minutes of airtime each with constructive input from the group. We stress constructive input, as we plan to address all feedback in a positive and enlightening way. If you are feeling grumpy when you wake up on the 2nd, please stay at home 🙂
Categories for feedback are:
c) Impact & Feel
Please note: We are not listening to the production of the song – we want you to bring your ideas, even if they are very basic. We’re listening for the bones of the song and want to help you make it a better one. There will be another forum for production technique – but this is not the one.
If you would prefer to bring an instrument for accompaniment and play the song live, we will be happy to facilitate, but your flash-stick must be selected to play. We have a basic 49-key arranger keyboard and some microphones. Play guitar? Bring it along.
13h00-13h30 – Lunch / Networking / Q&A
Tea and Coffee provided, please bring your own sandwiches, or a packed lunch.
13h30 – Formation of online group and discussion on the establishment of “The group project”
Ambitious, but we’re writing a song for charity and want your input!
Depending on time constraints we may workshop writing lyrics for a House track.
Looking forward to seeing you all here at the Hub on the 2nd September.
Don’t forget to bring your Songs, Sunscreen, Smiles, and Sandwiches!
